1. People are more vulnerable in front of the camera than you are behind it.
You’re not just photographing a pretty face. You’re holding someone’s self-image in your hands. Treat it gently. Be the hype woman they need.
2. Back up your photos in MULTIPLE places… and tell your clients to do the same.
Your future self will thank you. Your clients will thank you. Your sanity will thank you. PLEASE!!! Also - do not format any cards until you’ve delivered the gallery.
3. SD cards and batteries have the lifespan of a fruit fly.
Replace them often before they betray you at a wedding ceremony.
4. Everyone has insecurities — even the people you swear are perfect.
Ask them which side of their face they prefer. If there’s anything the client wants you to highlight vs avoid.
5. The market isn’t as saturated as Instagram makes it seem.
There’s a photographer for every personality, every style, every budget. There’s room for you.
6. Stop delivering on Google Drive — it looks like homework.
Use a professional gallery system like Pixieset or Pic-Time. It’s way better for client experience.
7. Know your worth early.
Photography is an expensive craft. You cannot shoot 8-hour weddings for $200 and survive. Charge what sustains you.
8. Lighting is EVERYTHING.
Gear matters, but knowing how to use lighting is… everything.
9. You will find some of your best friends in this industry.
Community over competition will change everything for you.
10. Be the community you crave.
Show up. Share. Support. The energy you put into the industry finds its way back to you every time. Im still learning this as an introvert.
