Aftershoot – How to Market Your Photography Business and Get More Clients
Marketing is one of the most overwhelming parts of running a photography business, especially when the algorithm is always changing. In Aftershoot’s marketing video for photographers, they break down the fundamentals of building a sustainable brand without relying on trends. Instead of pushing hacks or viral TikTok dance ideas, the video focuses on three core topics: social media, SEO, and networking. This is all framed around building trust with your ideal client.
Aftershoot’s video starts by telling us the importance of a well-designed website. A dream-client-tailored website is non-negotiable. Your website should feel intentional and cohesive instead of a portfolio dumping ground. Aftershoot says that photographers should avoid mixing unrelated photo niches (like car photography next to weddings), because that creates confusion for the potential client and weakens your brand’s name. A professional website is just as important as a professional social media presence. Instagram is the go-to for most people. Also, it is important to have a properly set up Google Business Profile. It plays a huge role in discoverability.

When it comes to social media, especially Instagram, the advice is pretty practical. Your bio should be concise, professional, and stripped of unnecessary fluff. If you’ve been published or featured, that can belong in the bio. Your grid should be curated, visually consistent, and niche-specific. One key takeaway is to only post the work you want to be hired for. If you don’t want to book family sessions, don’t post them. The algorithm may reward variety, but your future DREAM clients reward clarity. Collaboration posts are also highlighted as an effective way to increase reach while staying aligned with your audience. I have learned that this is true from personal experience.

SEO is positioned as a long-term growth strategy rather than a quick win. Aftershoot explains that better SEO often leads to better clients, clients who are actively searching, ready to invest, and aligned with your work. This includes placing keywords strategically throughout your site using H1 and H2 headers, embedding SEO naturally in page copy, and writing blog posts your ideal client is already Googling, such as “best wedding venues in Utah” or “how to plan engagement photos.”
Finally, the video emphasizes that networking and word-of-mouth remain some of the most powerful marketing tools available. This is also something I have experienced firsthand. The people who know of me versus the people who book me on Instagram are neck and neck. People trust recommendations from friends and family more than ads. Being active in your community, engaging genuinely on social media, and being a pleasure to work with directly impact referrals. Your reputation matters!!! Kindness and professionalism are marketing tools, whether you accept that or not.
For my buyer persona, I want photographers who want higher-quality clients without chasing trends or lower prices. This video matters because it reinforces sustainable growth. The video confirms that visibility comes from consistency, clarity, and connection. It did not focus on constant content creation, which I will get more into in future blog posts. Personally, it inspired me to double down on intentional branding for Shay K Photography, it made me want a cleaner SEO strategy, and more community-driven engagement. Marketing doesn’t have to feel chaotic. When done thoughtfully, it can elevate your brand instead of burning your brand or you out.
